What will happen to 2020 Summer Olympics?

Olympic Games are the leading multi-sport events that are held on winter and summer. Olympic games are held on every 4 years.  Winter sporting events on sports on every 2 years and summer sporting events on every 2 years. There are thousands of athletes participating in these sports among more than 200 countries.  International Olympic Committee (IOC) is responsible for organizing these events. Athletes do have dream of winning the Olympics medals for the country. Olympics is the world foremost sporting events with participation of more than 200 countries. Now the sport lovers have one question in mind, what will happen to 2020 Summer Olympics?

Tokyo was selected as a host city for the 2020 Summer Olympics back in 2013. Istanbul, Turkey and Madrid, Spain was other nominee for the host city but Tokyo, Japan got major votes. This is the second time Japan is hosting Summer Olympics. This is the fourth Olympics Japan is hosting including 2 Winter Olympics in 1972 and 1998. Tokyo is the first Asian city to host Olympics twice. First Summer Olympics was held on 1964 in Tokyo, Japan.

The 2020 Summer Olympics is very close for its inauguration and is scheduled for 24th July 2020. But there arose a global pandemic, coronavirus with its new form which is termed as COVID-19. There was dilemma among the IOC executive board members whether to conduct this Olympics or not. Japan is also got affected by this virus. So, what will happen to 2020 Summer Olympics? There is no clue yet about the end of the COVID-19.

Effect of COVID-19

The first cases of Japan were discovered between 10 to 15 January. The 30 years Chinese man was traveled from Wuhan, China to Japan. Though, there was cases in Japan from very early period, Japanese government can control the situation very well unlike other countries. The total data as of 18 March 2020 shows that the cases in Japan is still less than 1000 were total fatalities is 2 in host city Tokyo out of 31 nation wide.

When World Health Organization (WHO) declared global pandemic for COVID-19 International Olympics Committee (IOC) first decided to either cancel or postpone the 2020 Summer Olympics. But now they have changed their decision and they are focused on health and safety paramount as IOC executive board agrees to continue scenario panning for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. IOC is glad about the progress of Japan in context of COVID-19. This will be helpful for the athletes and the concerned people.


The COVID-19 cases are there in Japan. Japan has handled the situation way better than other countries and minimizing its active COVID-19 cases. By taking all these into consideration, International Olympic Committee (IOC) came to a decision to focus on health and safety paramount and continue planning for the Olympic games 2020 the   . This decision is made after the IOC executive board agrees to continue the scenario planning for 2020 Summer that is going to held in Tokyo, Japan. But there are still no exact scenes for the effect of coronavirus in near future. Olympic games are directly proportional to the effect of COVID-19.


Olympic Games will be held in Japan. There could be certain schedule changes. Number of participants is going to decrease. There will be cases of COVID-19 still in some part of world, though COVID-19 in Japan will be under control.
